Production and Education Assistant
Apply by July 27th, 2020
Tasks and Responsibilities
This role will assist our Production Director and Education Coordinator in the delivery of Quickdraw’s courses, workshops and events over the summer, with a particular focus on supporting our youth and teen day camps in July and August. Each summer, Quickdraw hosts day camps instructing young Calgarians in digital and analog animation techniques. The technical assistant will be responsible for assisting Quickdraw staff and instructors in making sure that all of the necessary hardware and software for these courses is in good working condition throughout the day camps, and in compiling the work created by the students. This will involve physical maintenance of analog animation equipment, as well as updating software licenses, performing basic computer maintenance, moving and setting up camera equipment, and similar tasks. The assistant will also support the production director in their role of helping Quickdraw’s member artists in creating their work. This will consist of preparing equipment for rental, performing inventory checks, and otherwise working with members to make sure they have the equipment they need and are informed in that equipment’s use. This role may also involve some basic custodial work to keep our studios and classrooms clean and organized for use in our programs.
Qualifications
- We’re a small team, so excellent communications skills, the ability to work independently, demonstrated good judgment and initiative are all essential.
- We provide a welcoming environment for members from diverse backgrounds; must be open-minded, with strong interpersonal skills.
- You’ll be working in a flexible and sometimes unpredictable environment; organizational and time-management skills are a must.
- Technologically adept; you’ll be setting up and troubleshooting different hardware and software setups, so a working knowledge of Mac OSX, Adobe Creative Suite (Photoshop, AfterEffects, Premiere, etc) and DSLR cameras is highly recommended. Knowledge of animation software is a huge bonus.
- A willingness to work with your hands, build things, and load gear in and out of the studios is required.
- Excellent social skills and friendly demeanor. You should be comfortable around children, artists, and people with various abilities, and be able to constructively work with them to achieve their animation goals.
- Knowledge of analog filmmaking techniques, film cameras, and/or film processing is an asset but not required.

GIRAF Trailer & Poster Artist
Apply by July 27th, 2020
Tasks and Responsibilities
The animator will create a short (20 second to one minute) animated “stinger” to promote Quickdraw’s annual animation festival, GIRAF, along with artwork and other illustrated assets to serve as the visual identity for this year’s festival. This will involve the generation of an original idea for the stinger, creation of initial sketches, storyboarding, the creation of an animatic (a rough version of the finished animation to determine overall timing), and the delivery of a finished short animation. While this may sound like a relatively small task, it is important to keep in mind that even professional animation studios measure the output of experienced animators in seconds of animation per week. Animation is a time-intensive task, and for an emerging animator, creation of a one-minute animation over the summer is no insignificant task.
This position is a 8 week contract, 35 hours per week, with an hourly wage of $16.50.
Applications must include a cover letter outlining your interest and suitability and a current resumé or CV, as well as a portfolio of your work.

Library Assistant
Apply by July 27th, 2020
Tasks and Responsibilities
Quickdraw has an extensive library of animation resources, including DVDs, Blu-Rays, books, magazines, LaserDiscs, film and other hard-to-find materials. These resources are invaluable to aspiring and experienced animators, providing inspiration, exploring techniques, and generally enhancing the creation of new animated works. Over the past several years, Quickdraw has been working on creating a new database for the library, to make its resources more accessible to our membership and the public in general. This work is nearly finished, but there are still some materials that have yet to be catalogued and entered into the system. The library cataloguer will be responsible for entering these items into our system, cataloguing them according to the coding system we have developed for the library, and including any relevant keywords to ensure the items are easy for our members to discover.
Qualifications

- An interest and ability to organize, catalogue, sort and process a wide variety of books, DVDs, VHS tapes, film reels, equipment, and membership data thoroughly and sensibily is a major requirement of this position.
- A familiarity with computers, scanners, DVD burners, and the ability to perform and/or coordinate a large amount of data entry into these systems is required.
- Knowledge of digital network infrastructure, servers, and sysadmin tasks is a big asset.
